Co2 Emission Efficiency Of Software Platforms: Is There A Price For Sustainability?

Environmental concerns and the impact of technology on climate are now a global concern. Individuals, organizations, and governments are trying to reduce CO2 emissions. However, the emissions produced due to running software have remained unquantified and neglected.

This talk presents a recently published IEEE article that proposes a framework to measure CO2 Emissions of software platforms. The framework is used to estimate the emissions of two well-known databases, Apache Cassandra and Aerospike. A comparison of running costs is also presented to ascertain whether there is a trade-off for sustainable software choices.
