Document data is becoming a critical asset for strategic data applications and use cases such as Customer 360, recommendation engines, personalization, operational data stores, and more. As a result, enterprises worldwide are making document data stores with JSON data a high priority in their digital transformation efforts. Forrester Research has reported a growing trend in the emergence of document databases to meet this need to support modern real-time applications at scale.

By way of background, a document data store – typically powered by a document database – uses the flexible data model provided by JSON to work with semi-structured datasets. Document data stores are ideal for handling complex real-world scenarios such as health records, retail customer data, and social media data. Because of their flexible schema, they can store and query data from systems of engagement, systems of automation, IoT and edge systems, and systems of record. With 80% of today’s data being unstructured and growing at a rate of 60%, there is a clear opportunity to analyze and act on it for key use cases.

  • Financial services – many market data providers provide credit reports, retail financial reports, customer reports, or employment records. The ability to work seamlessly with JSON at the database level simplifies application development and reduces errors in logic. Other use cases include loan and mortgage processing, fraud prevention, and investment portfolio management.

  • IoT devices – sensors, engines, or any devices that have telemetry are increasingly storing data in JSON format, which means that storing and leveraging real-time data at scale enables better tracking, management, optimization, and reporting.

  • Social media – social media platforms share data with developers via APIs that use JSON as the default transport method. Any application that integrates data from social media for real-time recommendations, risk management, or fraud detection will naturally be document based.

Document data stores that are powered by Aerospike’s document database capabilities benefit from the unparalleled performance and scalability of the Aerospike Real-time Data Platform. Developers can use the Aerospike Document API to store, query, and manipulate JSON document data in real time and at scale, from gigabytes to petabytes. This is especially true for read-heavy, write-heavy, and mixed workloads where other document databases struggle.

To learn more about the benefits and applications of a document database, join our upcoming webinar, Future-proof your infrastructure for JSON document data at scale. I will be presenting the Aerospike story and will be joined by guest presenter Noel Yuhanna, VP, Principal Analyst, Forrester. In the webinar, we will identify the factors affecting the performance and deployment of large-scale document data stores. Topics covered will include:

  • Profiling current document database options

  • Factors affecting scale and performance while employing document data

  • The most efficient and performant way to store and query document data
